Great choices! I grew up listening to all-R&B WPAL in Charleston in the early 50s, and heard many of these artists. In the late 50s, Esquerita (real name Eskew Reeder) refrequented the clubs of his hometown Greenville, SC, with his partner Melvin–pompadour, makeup, green cape and all. We had him playing at the frat house and occasionally in one of the all-white night spots. He’d already been eclipsed by Richard and wasn’t happy, and made up for it by being louder and more outrageous!

Finally, the one I’d suggest for inclusion: “Annie Had a Baby” by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters changed things in a big way in1955. Thanks for your terrific work. Thank you so much.

I love this site and the 50’s list especially. I was born in 64 and was weaned on 60’s and 70’s rock and roll.

A few years ago I got XM radio in my car and started listening to the 50’s station. Lignikon Serial Mom. That really opened my ears.

They do a deeper dive and the programmers are much better than the “oldies” radio stations I grew up with. I get a lot of good leads from them. Your 50’s list is a true gold mine though.

Your taste is impeccable, which is to say, completely in line with mine. I am completely in love with 50’s music. It’s my favorite jazz decade, favorite R&B decade, and now more and more it is becoming my favorite rock and roll decade. I have discovered artists like Percy Mayfield, Big Joe Turner, Jr Parker, Johnny Burnett, Don and Dewey, Jimmy Reed, (and on and on) here and am really grateful for it. Thanks again.

Regarding the entry on “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” specifically the discussion of its well known A-side: Big Bill Broonzy’s song was “That’s Allright, Baby,” while Elvis & co. Were remaking Arthur Crudup’s “That’s Alright, Mama,” and the two songs are quite different.

Crudup certainly owed a debt to Broonzy for his sponsorship, and for “It’s A Lowdown Dirty Shame” (which, unlike “That’s Allright Baby,” includes the lyric, “that’s all right for you/I mean that way you do”); but then, that lyric goes back at least as far as Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “Black Snake Moan” in 1926. So, was Presley covering Jefferson? I don’t think so. Crudup remade other Broonzy songs—notably, his “Rock Me Mama” was Broonzy’s “Rock Me Baby”—but “That’s Alright” isn’t a comparable example of a simple title change. Oh, and Charles Brown’s “Hard Times” wasn’t written by Brown: it was written specifically for him by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The phenominal amount of work that must have gone into preparing this was (for me certainly ) MOST appreciated.

Fire Eyes by??? 1957 would be an added bonus as the song that always comes to mind for me.

I used to work in a record store (Michaels, Port Elizabeth, South Africa) in the late 50’s so they ALL bring back memories. Is there no way that you could prepare these as a down-loadable album for purchase by the 100s ( or rather many many ) people who would like to have these as part of their music collection. All the very best to you, ianm.

OK, this is a bit pricey, but it IS worth every penny. Roy's Monument period WAS his strongest, with his strongest songwriting, production and (of course) singing. It is no coincidence that he had his fantastic run hits during this period (1960-64).and they are all here, in the best sound we are ever likely to get. If you really love Roy, this won't be enough, but if I could only have one Orbison album, this is it! If you are an audiophile, take note. These early 60s recordings blow most modern recordings away! State of the art in ANY era!
